Hydraulic Safety Guidelines

Essential safety protocols and best practices for working with and around high-pressure hydraulic equipment and systems.

CRITICAL SAFETY NOTICE

Hydraulic systems operate under extremely high pressure and can cause serious injury or death. Always follow proper safety procedures.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Required PPE:

  • Safety glasses or face shield
  • Cut-resistant gloves
  • Steel-toed safety boots
  • High-visibility clothing
  • Hard hat in industrial areas

Additional Protection:

  • Hearing protection in noisy areas
  • Chemical-resistant clothing
  • Respiratory protection if needed
  • Fall protection at height
  • Electrical protection gloves

High-Pressure Safety

Before Working:

  • Always depressurize system completely
  • Lock out/tag out energy sources
  • Use pressure gauges to verify zero pressure
  • Wait for moving parts to stop
  • Never assume system is depressurized

During Operation:

  • Never exceed rated pressure limits
  • Keep body away from potential leak points
  • Use proper tools and procedures
  • Monitor pressure readings continuously
  • Report any unusual conditions immediately

Leak Detection and Response

Detection Methods:

  • Use cardboard to find pinhole leaks
  • Listen for hissing sounds
  • Look for oil stains or puddles
  • Check for oil mist in the air
  • Use leak detection spray

Response Actions:

  • Shut down system immediately
  • Depressurize before investigating
  • Contain any spilled fluid
  • Evacuate area if necessary
  • Contact maintenance personnel

Hydraulic Fluid Safety

Handling Precautions:

  • Avoid skin contact with fluid
  • Wear appropriate gloves
  • Use proper ventilation
  • Store fluids properly
  • Keep containers labeled

Spill Response:

  • Clean up spills immediately
  • Use absorbent materials
  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Prevent environmental contamination
  • Report significant spills

Emergency Procedures

Hydraulic Injection Injury

Immediate Actions:

  • Do not treat as minor cut
  • Seek immediate medical attention
  • Tell medical staff it's hydraulic injection
  • Do not delay treatment

Critical Information:

  • High-pressure injection can be fatal
  • Surgery may be required within hours
  • Provide fluid safety data sheet
  • Document incident details

Fire Emergency:

  • Shut off power if safe to do so
  • Use appropriate fire extinguisher
  • Evacuate if fire spreads
  • Call emergency services
  • Do not use water on oil fires

System Malfunction:

  • Press emergency stop immediately
  • Clear the area of personnel
  • Isolate energy sources
  • Report to supervisor
  • Do not restart until cleared
