Hydraulic System Troubleshooting

Common hydraulic system issues, their likely causes, and step-by-step troubleshooting procedures to resolve them.

System Overheating

Possible Causes:

  • Insufficient oil cooling capacity
  • Internal leakage in components
  • Excessive system pressure
  • Clogged heat exchanger
  • Low fluid levels

Solutions:

  • Clean heat exchangers and filters
  • Check and repair internal leakage
  • Reduce system pressure if possible
  • Add or upgrade cooling capacity
  • Check fluid levels and top up

Slow or Erratic Operation

Possible Causes:

  • Air in the hydraulic system
  • Contaminated hydraulic fluid
  • Worn or damaged pump
  • Incorrect fluid viscosity
  • Clogged filters

Solutions:

  • Bleed air from the system
  • Change contaminated fluid
  • Repair or replace pump
  • Use correct viscosity fluid
  • Replace clogged filters

Excessive Noise

Possible Causes:

  • Pump cavitation
  • Loose mounting bolts
  • Air in the system
  • Worn pump components
  • Excessive system pressure

Solutions:

  • Check suction line and filters
  • Tighten all mounting hardware
  • Remove air from the system
  • Replace worn pump parts
  • Adjust relief valve settings

External Leakage

Possible Causes:

  • Damaged seals or gaskets
  • Loose connections
  • Cracked housings
  • Over-pressurization
  • Worn cylinder seals

Solutions:

  • Replace damaged seals
  • Tighten loose fittings
  • Repair or replace housings
  • Check relief valve operation
  • Rebuild cylinders as needed
